Yes, Jim, shameful things were done in the past, but I know you will strive for positive changes, now and in the future. Embrace it all, and help the buffalo and other wildlife at Yellowstone.

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Bozeman bound!.
Michael Barton, FCD has left a new comment on your post "Bozeman bound!":
Tom Bremer read my paper, commented that it was an important yet lacked an overall analysis. If there is a no go with Yellowstone Science as is, he has offered to coauthor a second draft, he providing more of a religious analysis that I cannot.
Of course, the center in Gardiner would be a treasure trove for you... Have you had the opportunity to meet Lee Whittlesey before?
And yes... there is no contradiction...
Where did you guys find a place in Bozeman (you can reply offlist for that one)?

Hey everyone,
Thanks so much!
And, Mike, I definitely want to meet you when we come to Gardiner - to talk about cell phone towers and other things, even the notion you've shared of Yellowstone as a kind of tabula rasa.
Michael, I have what you wrote in pdf; it's on my reading list. I will definitely get to it soon.
And, you know, "Me" would be the first to tell you that there is no contradiction between Wonderland and an infernal region.
Many cheers,
Jim

I once watched a show which featured a fundamentalist Christian man who sneeringly said, "Evolutionists think that humanity came from slime!" as though it were the most absurd notion, and everyone around the table snickered with smug agreement.
I thought, 'If he doesn't realize how sublime slime can be, then I can only pity the world of sterile abstractions in which he imprisons himself.'
Your essay is a messy, marvelous delight Jim! :)

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Re-mythologizing Yellowstone: Part 3 - A new Wonde....
Mike has left a new comment on your post "Re-mythologizing Yellowstone: Part 3 - A new Wonde...":
Jim,
This topic interests me, and I enjoyed reading your essays.
You ask, "where is the Yellowstone community that can tell its tale?"
If Yellowstone is primarily a public commons, established specifically to prevent privatization and exploitation, then the Yellowstone Community would theoretically be the entire American population (or the world). This idea can seem very egalitarian and liberating. In practice, however, maintenance of this public commons seems to require an authoritarian local administration that is run by the executive branch of the US government. (I don't mean this as a criticism. It's just a reality.) As a result, the community of people that live in the park are almost entirely shaped by cicrumstances that are, as you term them, either paternalistic/authoritarian or the result of corporate control by the concessionaires.
In other words, the unaffiliated average citizen is a very transient phenomenon in Yellowstone, staying an average of only 1.5 days. By default, the park is shaped and inhabited by agents of law enforcement and capitalism. Perhaps this is the reason that the more egalitarian myths which you seek have not surfaced.
I think (and hope) that most people visiting Yellowstone view it as a "blank slate," ignoring the pre-conceptions of past visitors. If Yellowstone is left largely undefined culturally, then people are more likely to be inspired by it. This, at least, is my argument in "Yellowstone: The two million acre conceptual space" (an essay in The Yellowstone Spectator". (www.YellowstoneEcology.com/blog)

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Re-mythologizing Yellowstone: Part 2 - Yellowstone....
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Re-mythologizing Yellowstone: Part 2 - Yellowstone...":
I think perhaps I find the Jellystone myth the most troubling of them all...the real lives of other beings reduced to a fun park, the silly bumbling talking animals, and us as Grand Master of everything. Making a spectacle of one of the few dwindling places which aren't paved over with strip malls and other vessels for human arrogance and consumption. Reducing magic to a spectacle with admission fees.
These myths are all self-serving, and yet are they really serving us? I often think that the toll these myths take on our humanity is as great as the toll taken on the world around us. By "humanity", I simply mean us as beings in a community of beings, who have lost our perspective or our sense of how to act or interact, independent of all this dominance baggage.
I'll be fascinated to see some of the new myths you envision. They'll be a breath of sulfuric air, I've got a feeling...

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Sounding off: Blue Angels blast through the Tetons....
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Sounding off: Blue Angels blast through the Tetons...":
I used to have a poster of The Blue Angels in flight, hanging above my bed.
No more. No more...
And yet, I have nothing against the planes themselves. Humans will turn everything into monstrosities, won't they? I miss the relationship I had with the planes as one dimensional images on my ceiling--as benign as the pinata in my living room--stripped of their noise and fumes and diabolically manipulated purposes.
They don't belong Yellowstone, that's for damn sure, or anywhere else where they can actually do damage (which is anywhere, really).
The military causes as much disruption and destruction in times of "peace" as they do in times of war.
It's not about the illusory dichotomy of war and peace, is it? It's about an entire reframing of our relationship with the world.
And learning to hear the breath and heartbeat of the Earth rather than merely our own claustrophic mutterings...

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Lake Erie, mayflies, and Jay Cooke: A Yellowstone ....
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Lake Erie, mayflies, and Jay Cooke: A Yellowstone ...":
Thoughtful. Thank you. And sad, as I watch Lake Erie be destroyed not only by large ships carrying cargo to "Junk-Mart" but also by the very people who flock in troves here each summer to fish, swim, sail, boat, and enjoy the beauty of this magnificant lake. These people have oviously forgotten (or perhaps were never aware) that all of life is connected. We are connected to the Lake, even if we don't realize it. So while the other residents of my street pay some company to dump chemicles into the lake in order to control the seaweed that "litters" up our docks, and clogs up jet ski motors and Heaven forbid touches kids toes when swimming - what they don't realize - or perhaps they don't want to acknowledge is that when you add anything that doesn't belong in the ecosystem, you may not see the negative effects immediately - but a basic biology or ecology class will demonstrate that something is happening and it can't be good. It seems like common sense to me.
Just wait 'till August when the algae blooms take over the surface waters and we can't even swim off the sailboat. Algae blooms are suspected to be caused by residential and agricultural runoff. :-(
I found your lovely blog through a simple internet search for chemicles used to control lake seaweed. I'm trying to find out what sort of trash my neighbors are putting into the lake now. "Better living through better chemistry," right?
Wrong!
Oh, btw, the weekenders burn their garbage up here too. I'm in the western basin.
