I found your essay/articles interesting. Somewhat overly cynical and pessimistic, I would say. The tide has turned slowly but surely. There will be setbacks but a new generation, with different values, has begun to work for a better future for the environment, for all of us.

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on A critique of national parks as "America's best id....

It's critical that western peoples not be greedy, not be self-serving; but that is not possible for most peoples much of the time, really. The motives of civilized peoples are a complex conundrum of both positive and harmful values. You phrase your points well.
It is useless but hopeful, in my opinion, to believe that western culture can ever do better than it has. There are limits, unfortunately, to what can be achieved altruistically.

I watched episode 1, but am going to Netflix the rest when they come out on DVD Oct. 6th or so, because I can't just devote 2 hours every night this week. But I will definitely keep in mind your thoughts while watching it. I did cringe at the statement that the best idea was Jefferson's, without any "Yes, but...."

gothie,

Thanks for the kind words.

Are you arguing something like "might makes right"? I suppose so, but that only opens another Pandora's box - what then is might exactly? And, there, we "might" find some interesting conversation.

I'll definitely look into what you wrote in your blog.

Jim -

You present a lovely argument and I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent reading and digesting it.

I'd say Locke makes a few pretty huge assumptions about reality but the largest by far is that any human, animal, plant, or ecosystem has any rights at all. I assert there are no rights save those one or others acting on your behalf can through force or threat of force require relevant parties to recognize.

As a result humans were not born with rights, did not band together/give up rights to the state to better protect existing rights. The formed groups to create rights, economies, and laws.

I've posted a longer piece on my blog on this topic. Also I recommend that, if you haven't, you give a book called "On Private Property" a read.

Respectfully,

Robert Williams has reported to me that Tom's story has one inaccuracy, namely that Robert is not a police officer but rather a volunteer with the police department. He asked me to post that correction, and so here it is.

This is a note to Genevieve from the former Miss Shannon Moreland. Congratulations on your baby boy. I have an 18-month-old daughter, Caroline.

I've been trying to find old friends, and I googled you. I was delighted by what I saw. You're as lovely as ever. You have not aged a day.

Hi Jim, I have heard a bit lately on the radio about the small wild herd that was approved to be moved to the Wind River reservation. I'd be interested more in your thoughts and analysis of that situation.

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Mourning the loss of William "Doubting" Thomas.

Michelle has left a new comment on your post "Mourning the loss of William "Doubting" Thomas":

Hello Jim,

Thomas was a mentor for me too when I met him in 1985. He chose to live by his ideals which brought him to create the vigil in front of the White House; he brought me to that same vigil where I too was arrested several times. It is extremely rare to find someone on this earth who speaks and lives the truth; who lives the life that his principles dictate, who lives by his ideals. Before arriving in DC, he had wonderful stories of traveling the world, giving up his passport and citizenship and trying to be what we all are: human beings sharing a planet with no borders. The lessons I learned from him are with me to this very day, and I am deeply saddened to hear the news of his death. PEACE be with you THOMAS.

Jim - your story about Thomas is so touching - he is my age and should have had many more good years to protest! Most of our generation has "sold out" in my opinion, and sacrificed their core beliefs to join the mainstream. It is very encouraging to know that some of us still care about the things we protested for and against back then. It is not easy to have the courage to not compromise those ideals. I am very sad that he will not be here to carry on - perhaps you are taking up where he leaves off. Virginia

[Jim's Eclectic World] New comment on Yellowstone doom: Imagine better this new year.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Yellowstone doom: Imagine better this new year":

We do limit our imaginations, don't we? We limit them in so many ways...by letting our culture determine the well worn paths down which our minds will travel...by following certain fascinations and not others...by prefering certainty to wonder...by feeling safer when a door is closed than when it is open...by our unquestioned assumptions...by the widespread mythology that human stories are the only ones worth telling...by our refusal to accept the fluid nature of self...by not realzing that numbers, words, colors, seasons, pebbles, waterfalls, lampposts and an infinity of other beings are alive too...by disintegrating mind chairs into passageways of guffawing calliopes.

Love
Me
